Has anyone got any experience or thoughts on pure nickel strings such as Fender 150s or Gibson Vintage re-issues? Both claim to have a vintage 'warmer' tone than the more usual rolled nickel strings. The reason I ask is that they are usually a lot more expensive than run of the mill EB's but i've found a cheapish mail order supplier so thought i'd try them. In the UK Gibsons are about £5.25 a set ($9.50) and Fenders are £6.75 ($12) whereas EB's are only £4 ($7) (though considerably cheaper than Elixirs that cost $14), but I've found somewhere that sells 5 sets of Fender 150SL's for £19 ($34). That makes them $6.75 a set which has to be a bargain but are they any good?

I've tried them and they do sound different - but it is a subtle difference. I'm not sure its a big deal unless you are a really accomplished player looking for just the right sound.

That's what I suspected - think i'll give them a try because they are actually CHEAPER than EB's but I wouldn't bother If I could only buy them at the full premium price
