Yep, there are sometimes patterns that go along with certain songs, but this can vary immensely depending on the song and chord shape. Yet there are general principles that you can follow. Like a typical country/folk strum hits the root bass string, the remaining treble strings, then the bass 5th, then back to the remaining treble...alternating back and forth.
