hi

Just wanted to ask if any of you knows some good music pieces, melodies.., that have a very distinctive sound. For example you can identify oriental melodies immediately, but I´m looking for something that is not very famous. Perhaps music from strange countries or something. And it doesn´t have to be played a guitar....

What in the world do you need this for? BUt anyway check out almost any Hindu music. Very not famous. And it's actually very distictive because it's played in the rare locrian mode.

wow Jolly...how'd long that take you type?!!!

try listenning to melodies on instruments that aren't on guitar...some favorites have been:

Trumpet,
Harmonica,
Balalika,
Piano,
Mandolin,
Violin,
Cello,
Flutes.
many, many more too....

I've listened to a lot of tradional Japanese, Native Indiana and celtic songs for inspiration. It's not just about the melody's, but also trying to impersonate the characteristics of a different instrument

Think of an instrument and try and learn a melody or develop a technique from it...you get some interesting riffs and licks...
Don't worry too much about me, ignore me long enough and I'll go away.

Dont be so mean Jolly Some of us aren't as enlightened like a chick magnet like you. I like Ozzy old and new for example. Although three quarters of your list is in my CD case the other stuff just dont cause epiphonies (not epiphones) But you were right.

:D I'm only joking around. Wow, the infamous songwriting mod has returned...well, maybe not infamous, but you have a cool user name. Heh...epiphones...I like that joke. I'm totally using that.

Edit: Ozzy is still on my bad side, that's why he's not included in that list, I'm still boycotting.

Doesn't matter. It's his succumbing to corporate whore MTV that made that possible at all.

Try listening to the genuine musicians from the elsectro/techno scence. I admit 99% of that genre is garbage but there are excellent musicians in every style. The cool thing about techno is that it is on the forefront of technology, so if you are looking for new sounds and a complete new approach to composition check out the following short list:
Astralasia
Orbital
The Prodigy
TranceWave

If you are looking for modern composers from a movie score perspective, check out the greats. Not all of the work you will recognise and most you will not have "really" listened to:
John Williams
Nick Kamen
Hans Zimmer
Ennio Marconi
Jerry Goldsmith
etc.

Celtic fusion music, very interesting:
Also, check out "Afro Celt Sound System" http://www.afrocelts.org/
Really cool mix of live Irish music, tribal beats and techno sounds.
Another amazing traditional Irish band that play in a more modern framework (with traditional instruments only) is "Kila". These guys are really cool, especially check out the percussionist who plays the badhran (traditional hand held celtic drum) - he makes it sound like a whole kit - worth checking out.
