learning different scales is never a bad thing, (I'm a big fan of the phrygrian). There's some great tutorials out there. Try searching GT or google of "Modes".

Alternatively, another good thing to do is to try learning some solos (I don't necessarily mean the actual solo of the song you're trying to play along to). If you learn of few licks from Maiden songs, for example, it'll give you a feel for the kind of runs and and patterns that work for those kinds of songs.

And ultimately, just experiment. Avoid using "typical" blues techniques like bending and double-stops; try playing solo's on one string; see what happens, whilst playing the blues scale, if you spefically play notes that aren't normally in it...(that won't necessarily sound good, but, hell - it can be good fun sometimes!)
