Some Squires are amazingly nice guitars for the money. Others are amazingly horrid. While it's been improving lately, "Fender Quality" has been an absolute myth since the late 90's.


The bottom line is that every company has quality control issues -- some worse than others -- but everybody has them.

So see what's out there, see what you like -- what sounds good and feels comfortable to you and forget brands and forget about if it's new or not.
