Tonic is the first scale degree. After tonic comes super tonic, mediant, sub dominant, dominant, sub mediant, and leading tone. In Cmajor the tonic is C, in Aminor the tonic is A, etc etc.

In C major, the scale degrees are as follows:

C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C

C is tonic (I)

D is supertonic, which is like tonic, but can fly and fight crime (II)

E is mediant (III)

D is subdominant (IV)

G is dominant, and apart from I is the strongest tone in the series (V)

A is submediant. **** submediant. (VI)

B is leading tone. And that brings us back to Do do do do. (VII)
