Band that requires you to play like someone else would eventually turn into an enormous boredom, but most bands want the new guitar player to fulfill all of their (not always realistic) expectations. What I did is lots of practice and lots of jamming with different musicians. Some of them liked what they'd heard, and wanted me to join them, but even then I was picky, so I was mostly sattisfied with how we sounded together.
At present time I'm not in a band, just doing lots of jamming, looking for a bass player, but I don't want to rush it.
Allso, there's nothing wrong in playing with musicians who are "bellow your level", as long as they are willing to practice a lot. Much better than the other way around.
