This might be kind of out there in a guitar forum but I thought I'd get other peoples opinions on this. Most of my friends think that I'm a rap hater and only listen to my "Devil" music. However, I enjoy rap and hip-hop, but the real stuff. I can't stand this dirty south crap. Real hip-hop is groups like Comapny Flow, Juarassic 5, Wu-Tang, Gravediggaz...ect. I would encourage anyone who doesn't listen to hip-hop or can't stand it at least give these groups a shot. Their lyrics are acually intelligent and there is a real melody.

Yeah...I went to school in the ghetto and everyone listened to rap and I kinda sorta used to listen to it to fit in. I regret those years. Thank god I got a guitar. Anyhow...I've heard of some of those and yeah I DO agree that some of it is pretty cool and the lyrics are intelligent. It's unfortunate that the more intelligent rap groups or artists are kind of underground. The current rap scene is mostly fueled by happy party songs and as u said "that dirty south crap." Well...whatre u gonna do!? I also think Nas is pretty cool although I must admit I've never heard his records, he just seems like a cool and smart guy.

Whatever tho...I prefer my devil music. I like to hear raging guitars and vocals I can't make out with insane drums and the occasional guitar solo. :D

Jurassic 5
Wu-Tang Clan
Mos Def
Immortal Technique
The Roots
Two Skinnee Jays (best to see them live...too bad they don't play live any more)
Run DMC
The Sugar Hill Gang

There are a few others worth mentioning that I can think of, but those are the ones that came off the top of my head.

I personally do not like rap. But the real problem rap has is the same problem as rock and other genres. The recording industry has turned it into pop candy. I don't even listen to the radio. I learn about music through guitar magazines and the internet, MOST of which tell the truth about what is real and what is pop BS. Musicians make art. Industry makes product.

I will dowload as much free stuff as I can and I can't wait for the record industry to go broke. Then how will artists make money you ask? They will play their music live. The good acts will stand and make good money...if not bazillions of dollars. Bad acts, artificial artists, and recording industry lackeys will go out of business. Making a bazillion dollars per record is anti-art. It's become just big business but it will crumble...no question about it. It's got nothing to do with music so it will fall in the face of technology and real art will emerge.

Don't believe me?....Perhaps you think they will come up with effective anti-piracy technology?....Then think about this....if you can hear it through speakers or see it on a screen it can be copied and distributed. Period.

I am not anti-artist, just the opposite, I'm very much pro-artist. But most artists are not popstars. We are smack in the middle of a musical renaissance and real art will emerge as a result of us "illegally" downloading music.

Maybe this isn't the right forum for this....anybody want to take this to another discussion somewhere? I'm new at this so if anyone wants to start it I'd be glad to contribute.

Yeah, but if you think about it, though... I hear A LOT more Godsmack on the radio than I do Children of Bodom.

Different genres... same damn thing.

You know...you're absoultely right. I hadnt made that connection before. Let it be known though that I love Children of Bodom. Honestly tho I dont listen to the radio at all. And yeah...the current state of modern music is sad. I wish it was the 80's. I say that having forgotten the 80's and the hell that was new wave and hair metal. :D

I'm not sure, but I would have to geuss that is because of Bodom's screaming voice. Since people (the fcc) can't understand the lyrics of Bodom and any onther metal band, they assume the worst. Oh its devil music, most of the words are curses. You can clearly hear curse words when they come up. The FCC has control, so why don't they just grow some balls.

Instead of CoB I could have just as easily used "Alice in Chains and Mad Season (especially Mad Season)."

A lot of the "hard rock" stations play music which is just as untelligable and the "screamy" stuff out there which is getting so popular is pretty hard to understand, too.

To the radio people, I think it's more about what will be instantly catchy vs. that which might be better, more original, more thought out music, but takes a person a few listens to get used to and enjoy.

If I'm not mistaken, radio works the same as TV in the sense that their success is based on ratings and they make money from advertisers. Basically their job is to keep people listening to their station. And the fact of the matter is, that more poeple want to listen to Godsmack than CoB. Sure, some stations have segments one night a week that play underground metal and stuff like that, but I wouldnt count on ever hearing CoB on regular rotation. Same reason you dont ever hear J5 on the rap stations. Thats my 2 cents.

For the most part, actually it's name recognition and what does well with the test audiences. Usually it's familiarity.
