Im looking on ebay for an mp3 player and hear any suggestions on which one to get. I only have a windows 98 computer. Also will an ipod work on my computer? Input is appreciated.

I think you need XP and I know you need FireWire or USB 2.0 to use an iPod (though they seem to work FAR better with FireWire).

I've got a cheapo Memorex MP3 player and it requires XP and it also hooks up via USB. Have you seen the new IPOD with the color screen on it. It's small and very nice. They say it holds 1000 songs.

I've got an Iriver 790 (256mb). Small but a great device. Not sure about Win98 though. It will work with USB 1.1 but a lot slower. One drawback, you can't transfer mp3s from the device to the pc unless it's a mp3 created by the recorder on the device.

On the plus side...it is a great little device for recording yourself during practice. High quality built in mic..and the capability to plug in an external mic. The latter allows you to set rec volume.

DONT GET AN IPOD. they are soo overrated. and everythings so expensive. get some other lowerbrand mp3 player that holds the same amount for way less.

seriously, my mp3player is horrible, it costed as much as a ipod shuffle. but holds almost twice as much and it has a screen, you can look through your songs, you can make it shuffle if you want and its just all around better.

you probly dont want a shuffle, but what im saying is that ipod....is a rip off.

I got a Rio 800 MP3 player. It works on 98 and USB 1.1. I've never had a problem with it. Only 256 Meg though..

Ipods aren't over rated. They come with many feature. You can put many songs on them in differnet formats (ie mp3,acc..), you can change the eq with a lot of pre sets, its very easy to find the song you want with the cool scrolling wheel. You can just hook up your ipod to your pc and automatically it will update it for you. They are pricey but worth the money.

I have a Rio Forge. 512k. Works really well. I've used about 1/2 the memory and I've got 77 songs on there now. About 5 1/2 hours of music so far. Perfect for those loooong runs.

I own a 10 Gig Ipod (3rd generation). The poster above made a great point about accessories but there are "generics" everywhere for much cheaper. For my money having owned a cheapo 256, an Iriver, and an Ipod...The Ipod is dominant. In this case you really do get what you pay for. '98 will work but I wouldn't get an Ipod if you have to stay with '98. The software won't exactly play nicely if you know what I mean. I would personally suggest that new Ipod nano. Really a great machine and 1,000 songs is pretty darn good. Trust me, you don't need a 40 gig unless you own every song ever recorded.

i have a ipod u have 2 have win xp or 2000 on service pack 3 i think (i didnt know that when i bought mines n had to wait like 2 week to get xp to upgrade my pc from 98) usb 1.1 or 2.0 work i think im using 1.1 n its quite slow, but still only take like a hour to put 1000 song on so its bearable ya can get away with a 600mhz procesor n 128mb ram itune justs reacts a bit slowly n videos are slow
