I personally don't care for any of the vocals in arch enemy or any of the music I listen to but to say its wankery without direction is just wrong and even though you said its awesome, I dont beleive its without direction.. Marching on Dead in Road, Wankery?? I think not, Snow Bound? wankery??? nope
Demonic science? chris solo, yes, mikes solo...not much..the last part of it no....Dead Eyes See no future? mindless wankery?? no.. SilverWing? mindless wankery? for the most part no.. I guess it just depends on who's soloing..Chris Tends to wank off more than Mike who cares more about the feeling.
Trivium sounding like Arch Enemy?? jesus dude...are you joking......Have you even listened to enough of theirmusic to make that comparison?..Iv'e heard all the arch enemy cd's and not one of them sounds like Acension or Ember To Enferno..not ONE OF THEM/
first arch enemy...now there tryin to be like Children Of Bodom?? whats next??? I seriously doubt that you have listened to enough of their stuff to even try to make a comparison...Its probably not your taste of music...Maiden isnt mind...I like some of there solos but I cant stand the singer or rythm nor can I stand the vocalist in the music I listen to.

I guess we have different opinions of wankery. I happen to believe that playing a few notes very quickly for no apparent reason is wankery. Arch Enemy tends to play a pretty decent solo for about 3 seconds before rolling straight into blazing fast idiocy without bothering with a transition. Also, I was pretty obviously being sarcastic when I said the wankery was awesome. No, I'm not joking. All these teenage-girl, hot-topic, look-at-me-I-wear-big-black-pants "metal" bands that are really just rip-off versions of COB. Yes, I compared Trivium to TWO bands! My God! How could they possibly sound like more than ONE band!? Well, perhaps the riffs sound like everything every other metal band of the day (Mastodon, Trivium, Arch Enemy, etc.). I don't even know how to classify it. To me it's almost as low as nu-metal. Music that doesn't require musicians. With melody out of the picture, the harmony can be just about anything. Apparently the best thing to use as a harmony is just a blazingly fast lick so that the notes can barely be made out and also it has none of that, you know, cleverness about it. It's what makes the difference between a Paganini and a Mozart. Guess which one is more widely considered the greatest composer of all time?

Also, Trivium is a bad form of nu-metal. Congratulations. "Like Light to Flies" is, guess what? A Nu-metal song! That insipid chorus, the wannabe-hard verse, this has all the markings of bad nu-metal! "Falling to grey," NU-METAL singing in there, too! And don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about. You can recognize nu-metal vocal harmonies every bit as well as I can. "Pull harder on the whatever-the-rest-of-this-title-is" more nu-metal! Hey, you know who else besides Arch Enemy and Trivium put a fast pedal-tone guitar riff in the intro to one of their songs? Nickleback!

Arch Enemy's wankery can be summed up nicely in "Exist to Exit," though there are many other examples, such as "Dehumanization," "Nemesis," "We Will Rise," and "Dead Bury Their Dead" (OHH a pretentious fugue solo! Don't mind if I DO!). I'm not saying Arch Enemy is a bad band, they're just terrible musicians with no melodic or harmonic sense.
I want the bomb
I want the P-funk!

My band is better than yours...
