i came up with a few topics, one becasue i read an article in the portland mercury (its kindof like a progressive scenester newspaper that has music, politics, movies, bla bla bla, but totally liberal) that had a number of articles on how solo artists are killing rock bands. the reasons wehre numerous, stating that its easier to have a laptop and recording equipment than to have 5 band members, buy gear (amps, guitars, zylaphones, whatever) and to have rigs to carry the **** when you tour, pay for recording studio time, a practice spot, and have to deal with the daily problems of band members with different interests than you, not to mention drug problems and stuff that goes along with rock n roll. so they whre weighing out pros and cons and stuff, very cool and legnthy topic. another that i thought tied on to that was how rap music is becoming tahe dominant youth culture, and rock is kindof taken a backseat to hip hop and "r&b". (no matter what youre annoying 13 year old neighbor tells you, greenday doesnt count as rock and roll on mtv) so yea. then i had a cool idea of talking about the difficulty in getting signed as a musician becuase there are so many good ones now adays. as far as being a musician, the talent has upped the ante, and in order to acutallyu make money with music practically, you have to be a musican for hire that is somehow better than the hundreds of thousands out there. i know, they all kindof soudn the same, but the idea for a senior project is to have one main idea and stick with it. so i couldnt really dwell on all three of those topics in my paper, only one, and i have to have an arguable thesis, like "rock and roll is going the way of the american indian" or something.
