First, you need the incentive to try and find stuff out on your own. Change your settings around, play at different volumes, change pickups around, get different effects pedals. The way to get the sounds you like is to experiment. It took me 3 years to get the set-up that I have now, but whos to say it won't change. You gotta take some action on your own part.
