You might also check out the backing tracks here. I think for non-subscribing members, you get 2 free ones of the 20 or so that are there. Again, you can find backing tracks on other sites as well. But if you just get a recorder of some kind (even a cheap tape one) and play 1 or 2 chords to make up your own backing track, that should open up some creativeness when playing scales on top.
