Just do the same type of exercises, except use and learn different scales as the patterns....

Get a metronome and do some scales to a click at a slow speed.. then subdivide it by doing 2 notes between each click.. then 3, then 4 (16th notes) try to keep every note clean.. keep ur picking alternating and remember to accent the notes meaning hit the note a lil harder at the same time as the click..

"i was expecting some 3476 string string skipping with some 23489172343 octave sweeps and some alt picking runs at 345734237623572bpm in 234872364781246164516th notes across your 2384723648724627348623478264 fret guitar"

You should start with theory first. Depends on the type of chord you want to solo over. Really, start with theory, get metronome and practise veeeery slowly!!!! Fast speed solos or playing is a secondary product of having very precise technique at SLOW speed. It might take months or even year. Just be persistent, stick to it and don't speed up tempo unless you can play the certain pattern without any mistakes and feel REALLY comfortable with it. Once again I have to emphasize: it will take some time!!!

Try the minor penatonic scale, it is super easy sounds awesome to improv on.
The greatest enemy to what you can know, is what you already know.

It's not how good you play, its how well you play it.
