As some of you may know I am in New Orleans right now. My brother's friend is very active in a levee organization of some sort, so he took me on a "desolation tour." This brought me through lake view, the lower 9th ward, and Biloxi, Mississippi.
The lower 9th ward is where the levee broke (after Katrina hit). The most the federal goverment has done is moved the houses of the streets. All of the debris is still there. The traffic lights don't work. This is a residential area, well was.
On our journey to Biloxi we got to see all the dead swamps from Katrina blowing swamp water. Swamps work as natural levees, dead swamps=not a very good thing. This isn't just an environmental issue, its a safety issue.
We reached Biloxi. For those of you who don't know it's a coastal gambling tourist trap. Most of the debris has been cleaned up by the federal goverment.
So here's my question: Why is a coastal tourist trap cleaned up before a residential area that was destroyed because a federal goverment constructed levee broke? It's not a matter of rebuilding even, it's a matter of picking all the crap up.
