Robyn, my suggestion would be to learn as many songs as you can. Start off with simple ones. I don't know which style of music you like, but some simple songs to learn would be Green Day's "Time of Your Life" or Pink Floyd's "Wish you Were Here".

Learning songs will help you learn new techniques while improving your knowledge of the instrument. You'll be jamming in no time.
