Never take the output from the headphone amp because it's amplified.
(Unless you like lots of noise and distortion)

A mic might help cause you can adjust the volume on your amp.
Really what you need though is a small mixer to go between your guitar and amp so you can ajust the volume of instruments going into the computer.
You could also use a multi effects unit with a volume control.
