DiMarzio
I'm looking at putting DiMarzio pups into my solid body LP copy and I'm just not sure what I should put into it. I was looking at an Evolution/Humbucker from Hell combo, but I'm just not sure I've been playing around the idea of a Tone Zone or a Fred with some 1 Meg Tone pots. If you have expirience with DiMarzio pups and know how to achieve a very versatile sound, I'd really appreciate any help.

I have an (almost) identical pair of 1984 Yamaha SBG1000 guitars. Check my avatar - these are like a double-cutaway LP Custom. Better-made, IMO, but that's another story. The only difference between them is the pickups. The one I bought new (Brand X), has a Dual Sound at the bridge, and a SCHB at the neck. The Dual Sound is a 4-wire version of the Super Distortion. The SCHB (Super Clear HumBucker) is a pair of VS-1 strat-type single-coil pups assembled on a humbucker frame. Sorry - it's discontinued. The other SBG1000 (The Stalker), has a Tone Zone at the bridge, and a PAF Pro at the neck. Both sound great, but there are differences.
Brand X is a straight-ahead Classic Rock and Blues-Rock machine. The Dual Sound gives me great rock tones in either series or parallel coil mode. The SCHB has a balance of warmth and clarity that really sings. They work really well together, and the tones available with them out-of-phase will stun!
The Stalker has more edge to it. Both of these guitars introduce some lovely harmonics as a note is held (great natural sustain), but the newer design pickups do more with those overtones. And the out-of-phase tones kill! This baby was made to wail!
Both are very versatile and have really excellent tones available. The choice comes down to taste and style. With the classic-design pickups, you can pull off just about any genre. With the new-design pups, you add a bunch of attitude, to the point that there's nowhere to hide. If your chops aren't up to the task, it'll show. If you have the right stuff, this is exactly the combination that will let the world know it.
