Well to start out, ive only slightly played guitar learning only intros to some easy metallica songs, red hot chili pepper songs etc. Nothing hard what so ever. For Christmas i got an electric guitar "Squire" or something to that appeal and its alright, the strings make the guitar sound god awful. I havent played in about a year because i had surgery on my shoulder but i want to play again.

What would some of you recommend doing at my point, im 16 years old and am clueless as to where to go now. One of my friends suggested buying new strings and an acoustic guitar to play on.

BTW the amp i have is terrible too and i cant figure out how to work it to make it sound cool :(

Well, first of all, I would reccomend new strings if your old ones sound so bad. I like Dean Markleys but Ernie Balls seem to have a better sound but I don't like them too much since they break easily. At your stage you can keep learning other peoples songs unless you want to start making your own. If you want to make your own then I suggest that you get books on theory and learn as many scales and chords as possible as this will help you get started on understanding how they work. What kind of amp do you have? I might be able to help you.

Thanks for the help, my friends guitar had B2 strings which he recommended to me. They sounded good on his guitar and he said its the same on mine (we have diff guitars).

the amp i have came as a package with the guitar...its a SP.10 it says if that means anything :\. Sry i cant be more descriptive b/c i have very little knowledge of actually playing music. Im just basically in love with all old rock.

Now dont get me wrong i like some metal too like slayer, slipknot and pantera. I would love to learn power chords, but so far ive only gotten to strumming down not up yet and i cant read music...generally i just look for tabs on the internet from some bands and ive realized one of my fav bands is kinda hard to play (green day).

Hi, if you change the strings and it still sounds horrid, it's possible the the bridge needs to be ' Set up '
The Symptons are : it will tune up OK and chords at the lower end will sound allright, but the further you climb up the neck the worse it will sound.
A reputable Music store will re - adjust the bridge for a small fee, or someone handy with an Electronic tuner will be able to sort it.
Fenders - I love um
if you always take the lazy route
