I don't trust any poles or really anything that the news says. All those stats are pretty much made up. Have any of you ever been asked to be in any of those survey? The mass media is just one tool the government uses to brain wash us. The news is not to be viewed as fact. The news is pretty much one person reporting and giving his/her opinion on an issue. They report on there perspective. If you want to know what is really going on, see what the people that are directly involved in a certain situation have to say about what is going on. Go to the source, not an outsider who pushes their views on you.

Considering how little support our government is getting from our media, I really don't see how the government is using it "as a tool to brainwash us."

I do however agree that reporters' personal opinions make it too much into their work -- and it's as much about what facts are omitted as what is stated.

For instance, in the case of the Iraq war, we are constantly barraged with the number of casualties that our troops have taken; yet we rarely hear about what they have accomplished... how are we to form an honest opinion about what is going on when we don't know what our soldiers are dying for? Or how few are dying compared to past wars, or how much better at killing insurgents our troops are than the insurgents are at killing them?

These are all important considerations, not just the number killed or wounded.


So, yes... it is best to investigate for yourself and get as much first hand information as you can... but then again, most people don't have the time or ambition to do that.
