I want to learn the technique where you use your right hand fingers up on the neck to pick. It looks like a cool technique for when you are playing fast.
Think it's called fingerpicking but I don't know.
Anyone know of a site to help with that or could advise me themselves?

More than a technique, finger-picking is a style of playing the guitar.
This style is used for classical music, flamenco among others.
There are a few rules to fallow:
-Your right hand should not rest on the body of your guitar, but suspended
on the air.(makes you look like a pro)
-use the thumb to play the low "E", "A" and "D" strings, downwards.
-The other three strings are played upwards, and each finger gets one
string:
Index finger.....plays the "G" string.
Middle finger....plays the "B" string.
Ring finger.......plays the "E" string. (high "E")
The pinky is rarely used for picking, but you can use it for rythm and tricks
{like playing artificial harmonics}
I like the finger- picking style, becouse it gives me more control over the instrument, and it is great for DYNAMICS(how hard or soft you play the guitar). And I`m able to play faster when I alternate two fingers than using alternate picking(with the pick)
Practicing this style will make things easier, if you ever wanna try the
hybrid picking style( a mix of Picking and finger picking)
You can search the tabs for this song "Romance Anonimo"...if you want to practice the finger-picking style.
Someday I`ll play like in my dreams.

I have read about this and to my knowledge it is basically just hammer-ons and pull-offs with your right hand further up the neck.

I don't know if this is what I mean but here is a video of it.
I got this off of the listening post.
It is an '8 year old boy' (don't know if thats true)
But anyway, when he plays with his right hand on the neck, thats what i mean.

Somehow... I don't think he's talking about finger picking... I believe he's referring to tapping.... hence "right hand finger up on the neck". So... the technique is called tapping... If you're interested in learning this technique check out the tutorials on this site also listen to "Midnight" by Joe Satriani... this song is entirely two hand tapping (he doesn't PICK a note the entire song). It's not tooooo tough to figure out if you listen to it and get the fundamentals of tapping.

If you can download music you can just download the song... you might be able to look around on the net to find a place to listen to it or listen to a clip of it. i was just using that as an example of tapping though. I use that song to wamr my self up sometimes since it's not too hard but it makes you use both hands to tap. There are many many many other songs that use tapping. It's mostly a solo technique used in speed runs. You hear tons of it in metal and hard rock as well as classic rock. Van Halen, Satriani, Vai, Zakk Wylde, Kirk Hammett, and many others all use the technique religiously. Check out the lessons on this site as well... I believe the even have a lesson to teach "Midnight" by Joe Satriani

If wat you wanna learn is the finger tapping or Fretboard tapping technique, here is some info.
Finger tapping is playing hammer-ons and pull-offs (trills) with your freting hand; while using the index finger of your picking hand to "tap" other notes.
Eddie Van Halen is known for using this technique, in fact I saw a video where they said that Eddie was the one who invented this technique.
There are a few examples you can hear in the Home page of Guitar tricks under the "by inspiration" menu. click on Eddie Van Halen.http://www.guitartricks.com/freelesson.php?input=bD5hOjVmZDY=

Another aproach to this technique is using the side of the pick instead of your index finger. And you can also add some slides to it (tap slide); sounds really cool.
Note: when you tap meke sure you press the string all the way against the fretboard.
Someday I`ll play like in my dreams.
