Well, your on a site that concentrates on just that, so the best bet is to check out the freebie lessons here first or go through some of the written portions of the other lessons. If you like what you see, pay $5 and spend a month trying out the lessons. There's all kindsa stuff from basic songs:

to scales

to tapping

to shred, acoustic, jazz.. you name it.

What has helped me a lot has been the recording software ( Guitar TRACKS).
It wasn't untill I recorded my playing, I could properly hear what I was doing obviously you''l need a computer etc
I certainly haven't found the electric guitar to be a cheap hobby - but well worth it

Take your favorite songs and master them. After that try to improve on them. The most important thing though is that you play and when you do just let it flow. Whatever come to mind while playing try to do it.

I second that, you improve most when you start recording yourself in the quiet of your own home. No pressure to get things right in front of other people when you are just beginning plus you can loop something and spend hours working out solos at 3am;-) Not cheap though... a few years later and I have about 5K worth of gear in my home studio!
