Any tips on singing while you play? I've been playing guitar for almost a year now, mostly praise music, so it's not too hard, but if I try to sing while I play I mess up.

Thanks,
Jeff

I've read that all u have to do is take it slow and learn them both at the same time and bring it up to speed. The same way you'd learn a difficult song. Having said that, however, I've never been able to do it myself....not that I've ever tried. If I could sing and play gutiar at the same time I might actually have a career. I too...would like an opinion on this. Anyone!?

I'm not sure what the recommended method is for learning to sing while playing, and I can only do it while playing chords really.

I learned by hitting each chord once only on the change whilst singing, and then building the strumming patterns around that. I've found that I can separate the vocal line from the guitar line in my ear, so the two don't confuse each other, but it took me a few months to get there.

Like everything else, it's practice and persevering.... :D

I think it takes a lot of brainpower to do both things at once. I think you kinda have to get the guitar part wired before you can even do any singing. So it's like the guitar is on autopilot and you're singing with all ur concentration. If that makes any sense. I can kinda do it when I play Babe I'm gonna leave u by Led zeppelin. I've played that song a million times. I have no idea how guys like Yngwie, Satch, Vai, Clapton and Hendrix ever got around to learning hard guitar parts and vocals. Smart guys...

this is what I did, I memorized the words to the song, and while I play'd I put the concentration on playing the guitar and sortof just talked the word (i missed some of the words) then after a while it becomes ez er and ez er and you don't have to think about anything, the words will just flow with the music
hope that was any help

(oh and to relax a bit I'd say start off with singing screemo, it easy, nobody understands it any way and you dont have to worry about the tone of your voice)

Yeah, just learn it slowly on both sides. All it takes is practice...and a lot of frustration, haha.

This will sound stupid, but start with songs that you know like the back of your hand. Happy Birthday (not the Beatles) She'll be coming 'round the mountain, favorite Christmas carol-something you can sing without any thought at all.

Strum straight-down and up, and sing. When you get the hang of it, change your strumming pattern, until you have the best version of Happy birthday ever.

In the future, you can't learn 2 things at once. You have to either have the lyrics and tune down pat, or the guitar part. Then put them together.

As with everything-it takes time. The hardest thing to do is sing the tune, not what you are playing. (although, if you sing what you play, you can sing harmony)

1: singing metal (or screamo as you're calling it) is not easy!
2: if you know how to sing it well, then yes you can be understood
3: the tone of the voice is VERY important in metal
search this message board for a thread entitled "screamo" or something along those lines...

I'm pretty sure the person that mentioned screamo wasn't talking about metal music. Screamo is a subgenre of punk music where the vocalists "screams" throughout the song. Thus the name screamo. True metal singing can get very intense, of course there are some artists who can barely sing.

Get to know one or the other, guitar or vocal parts, so well that you can do it in your sleep, then add the other. You should be able to do one or the other without thinking about it.
I was in a Praise band for several years playing bass and guitar. I sang harmonies as well as the melodies and it all got very easy with time.

Here's a fun game, find a song you know, learn the lead (melody) and play that while singing harmony, or the other way around! I did that with Amazing Grace and it was interesting to say the least!

I've always found it easier to learn the lyrics and melody first... then learn the guitar parts...

Seems to me that singing is one of those things that you learn soon after learning to talk so it's easier to ingrain the singing first...

At least that's what works for me in general...

I can do it the other way around... but not as easily

Same here, I'm in a praise band, looking to harmonize with the singer, which I can do just fine, just not while I'm playing, lol, thanks for your help
