Right, basically, I'm bored of living in the UK where 80% of people will rob or assault you and it rains all the time. I've been spending about 3 months a year in the US, and would like to do more...

Cutting to the chase - does anyone know the ins and outs of US immigration policy? From what I can see, the lottery is no good (slim chances, and the UK isn't eligible anyway), and I have no relatives out there. I also don't have an employer to sponsor me.

Can it be done, and if so, how? Any advice much appreciated...

Later dudes...

US immigration policy is ..... do they have unique skills / money, if so, let em in. If not...forget it !! The lop hole here is student visas (F1) and it costs an arm and a leg to study here. A work exchange program (like camp America) may also be an option.

I am on an H1 visa (despite being married to a person from Pittsburgh) because the naturalization process is a) expensive and b) very invasive and although we have nothing to hide I really don't appreciate being told (or my wife being told) to drop 'em and bend over by anyone !!

I have really enjoyed being in the US and it has been very good to me. However, unless you have some unique skills or earn more than $100 000 a year / have friends in congress I'd think long and hard about Canada !!

Thanks Doc...

I'm not sure if my skills are unique, but my earnings are in that ballpark - what did you have in mind?

Maybe Canada is the way forward....

That is hilarious! haha.
But I think when Doc said Canada he means that the opportunities are about the same there and the culture isn't much farther off besides the fact that instead of having Presidents on your currency you have hockey players. Canadians tend to not like Americans too much... I don't know why... But I wouldn't want to live anywhere North of where I currently live. I like being able to enjoy winter when it's here... and then enjoy a nice long summer. But I don't know anything about how to go about gaining citizenship here.

You can trace that to the Liberal Party of Canada and their strangle-hold on power here. Socialism, and the associated 'politics of envy' run rampant through most of the population. Your salary range indicates some familiarity with entrepreneurship, so I would recommend Alberta. The locals who were born and raised here tend to be insufferably smug, but at least free enterprise is recognized as a good thing.

I'd like to go to Canada. It seems more laid back there. I'm a laid back type guy so that works for me.

hey man, at least you don't live in california, where everywhere you look there are illegal mexicans EVERYWHERE!! chances are someone that lives on your block gets their lawns mowed by an illegal immigrant. I've got 5 or 6 people on my street that get all their yard work done by mexicans (not sure if they are illegal or not... but chances are that they are) the only plus is, if you need some hard physical labor done, all you need to do is drive around, find a couple, tell them that you'll pay $5 an hour, and you've got some hired labor! (minimum wage in california is $6.75 btw)

You know. I've heard similar tales. And can I play leads in this brazillian death metal?
