Grand Funk Guitar tone?

Trying to duplicate that nasal in your face lead guitar sound thats grand funk trademark I guess. We've had some success using the fx pad on pro tracks and got it pretty close but doesn't cut thru enough. Anyone got any suggestions

[font=trebuchet ms]Mark was playing an aluminum-bodied guitar through West amps. I used to get close with a Gretsch Roc Jet and a Fuzz Face.
