How do sustainers work?

I was wondering how things like the E-bow or a fernandes sustainer work.

Anybody know?

I'm not sure about the Fernandes Sustainer but the E-Bow works by using electronic frequencies that vibrate the strings without having to pluck the string. I imagine the Fernandes Sustainer works about the same way.
