Learning the acoustic
I recently got an acoustic guitar as a gift and am trying to learn by book. It has taught me some things, but I really want to learn to fingerpick (eventually working up to Flamenco). I am currently practicing with the opening to Dust in the wind by Kansas. Does anybody know anything else that will help me?
Thanks in advance.

Honestly i would say get an instructor or teacher. Its jsut better than doing it on your own so that you wont build up any bad habits and you wont get frustrated since he/she could always give you something new to do and discover. Nothing beats an instructor.

Well, you could get an instructor. That is better for some people. But learning on your own has some of its own advantages. Just practice everyday, and keep it up. You'll get it eventually.

I would only add...
Don't get frustrated if you reach a plateau in your learning. I think most people do... they get to a certain level, then kinda stay there awhile before progressing to the next.

get an instructor. and learn on your own. whoever said learning on your own isbetter than getting an instructor obviously has no idea what he is talking about. let me explain
say u have an instructor. u go to him once a week for 1 hour. now say u practice 8 hours a day. who's teaching you now??? you're teaching yurself. the instructor is there to correct your mistakes, your bad habits. but for those 8 hours a day, u gotta make sure your arent doing these bad habits. instructors are there to show you how to do things right, yur there to enforce those rules.
so even if u get an instructor your still leraning on your own. but an instructor is there to help you. so get a teacher.
