Nothing ever seems to work the first time. Are the lessons you've been reading unclear or are you just having a hard time making it work? Some things won't as easily as other things and it depends on how much you put into it. Just take your time and keep practicing.

Whatever you do, don't eat limes. A friend of mine ate a lime once and BAM!! Two years later. Herpes.

What is fret tapping? It sounds simple but not sure exactly what it is.

Hi, I am glad you decided to play and that you are learning so fast. I hope that what I say here will be taken as I say it and not as a condesending remark because I mean it. To know that, though, you'd have to know I teach guitar. I have played a long time, too.(20+ years) So I try to know what I am talking about. On to tapping!

Ok,tapping is the technique of using your picking hand to tap notes that you wouldn't be able to play otherwise and it sounds really damn cool, too. I almost forgot that it looks really cool, too.
The next thing to cover is the sound of tapping. You need to listen to some of the good tappers to hear how it sounds when done right in order to get it into your hands. I would start out with Eddie Van Halen's solo "Eruption" off Van Halen, the first album(CD now). The whole last section is all tapped until it gets to the part where the note slides down to the low octave (this is a studio trick Eddie does by sampling the note then slowing it down with an echoplex). Then listen to guys like Billy Sheehan (tapping bassist), Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and that new guy, the one that's really good at it, Wayne White (oh,yeah! That's me!!!)
When you first start out begin with the high e string (the thin one) and hold your index finger of your fretting hand over the 5th fret and your pinky (also of the fretting hand) over the 8th fret. Next, put your index finger of your picking hand over the 12th fret.
Start the cycle by planting your index finger of the fretting hand on the 12th fret. While that finger is hammering the note there you will place your index finger of your fretting hand on the 5th fret in preparation of the release of the note on the 12th fret. Release the note held by your index finger on your picking hand by a slight pulling up or down of that finger. This will sound the note that you are holding at the 5th fret. Next, hammer the pinky of your fretting hand down on the 8th fret. Viola! You have just played a tapping cycle. You can do this with any scale in any position. You can also add fingers from both hands, just get this down first, then on to bigger and better things.
The next cool technique I play around with is string skipping. This is truly scary sounding and when done right I think it sounds incredible. First, let's play a scale like the pentatonic scale. That's found by playing the 5th fret, then the 8th fret on the lowest string(E). The 5th fret then the 7th fret on the next(A). The 5th fret, then the 7th fret on the next string(D). The 5th fret then the 7th fret on the next string(G). The 5th fret then the 8th fret on the next string(B). And lastly we play the 5th fret and then the 8th fret on the highest string(e). Next, we are going to play every other string up and down while staying within the pattern I've outlined. Holy Shnikeys,Batman!!!!That's F@@@ing cool! The next thing to do is come up with other combinations of those notes that sound cool to you! Ok? Any questions, email me @shredheadwayne@hotmail.com :)
