Unless the song is slower than I'm playing it....

That's weird, using downstrokes is the only way i can play that part of the song at full speed. I tried playing it just now, the first note is a "normal" downstroke, the 2nd and 3rd notes are a 2-string (downstroke) sweep. I tried alternate picking too, it's not impossible for me to play it like that, but still not as fast as when i use downstrokes.
