Tough question to answer without knowing more about your setup and it's intended use.
Are you talking about software or hardware based?
How much is 'affordable' to you? $100? $5,000
When you say 'live' play what do you mean?
Are you looking for something for a one man show type of thing or midi based for a full band?

I have the Dr770 and it is great !!

Im currently using it not only as a midi sound module (plugged into my Yamaha DT Express II) but also as a transport control for Logic running on my Mac. Very cool !!

The only warning I would give is that the bass sounds are lame. If you want to do bass lines and all you night want to think about a second hand stand alone recording unit. Machines like a Korg D1200 have a built in drum machine and plenty of spare tracks for Bass line, other bits of rhythm guitar etc etc. They run at between 3-400 bucks second hand.
My instructors page and www.studiotrax.net for all things recording.

I've got a Boss Dr. Synth so yeah, good choice.
Not sure about the features of the others and whether they still carry the same models but mine has about 7 drum kits and full GM MIDI + built in chorus & reverb. I used it for about 5 years before uprgrading to software based stuff. I still use it now if I want to work on keyboard parts without worrying about latency delays. Check eBay.

You might want to check out the ZOOM RT-223. It has drums and bass sounds, lots of preset patterns and lots of user patterns to store stuff in.

Good luck! :o
Everything is OK in the end.
If it's not OK, then it's not the end.
