OK, I have been a Children of Bodom fan for quite awhile now, and I am wondering, how can I increase my alternate picking ability and speed, while remaining clean technically. I can play fast, but it seems to always sound "stuttered" and just doesn't sound that good. The only time I can alternate pick fast and cleanly is when I pick with the pick on the fretboard for stability. Do any of you have any tips? I already practice 3-4 hours a day with fingering excercises. I want to eventually be able to play the solo to Trashed, Lost & Strungout. Also, those of you who thinks he is tapping the solo, watch the video, or watch him live.

Also, are any of these videos worth getting for speed metal:
-Speed Kills
-Speed Lives

Cheers

Accuracy with alternate picking is something that will come. Don't get discouraged if your practice doesn't pay off right away. The best thing to work on accuracy is do some chromatic runs with a metronome. Start off at a beat that you can do pretty easily and cleanly... then speed it up gradually. This works for me but I don't claim to be a speed demon and I rarely go off on self-indulgent shred solos....... I'm not sure about those videos. I almost guarantee you will learn something by watching them... Michaelangelo is a shred machine.

Thanks, i've watched Michael Angelo Batio, and he is probably the best I have seen. Thanks, I have been getting discouraged as of late though, because I practice chromatic runs all the time, and still can't play as fast as my guitar hero, Alexi.

I'll bet you didn't know Alexi's been playing guitar since he was something like 6 years old. I don't remember the actual age, but I do know he's been playing longer than I've been alive. That's also probably got something to do with his skill. Just relax, it'll come in time.

speed kills and speed lives are basically the same, speed lives is just an updated version, i'm not sure though, i might be wrong. :o

At least download the GP-tab for the intro solo to speed kills/lives, it's called "no boundaries" download it from mysongbook.com, IMO the best ****ing solo there is.

Michael Angelo uses a mix of alternate-picking and sweep-picking in this song, use a metronome, start with the easy parts of the song. Good luck ( no i'm not being sarcastic) :p
