when am i supposed to use alternate picking and when should i sweep-pick?

I'm trying to learn these 2 songs, and some parts of the songs are too difficult if i'm not sweep-picking. Do i need to practice more, or is it ok to sweep-pick?

The reason i'm asking is because i feel like i'm "cheating" in some way when i sweep-pick, or when i use hammer-ons and pull offs instead of playing each note.

B.t.w. the songs are : Yngwie malmsteen - vengeance and Eric Johnson -cliffs of dover.

If your having trouble with the alternate picking part, I think you should practice it more. If theres ever something u cant do, instead of avoiding it keep at it until you can get it, which will broaden your spectrum of knowledge and ability.
We've been dancin' with Mr. Brownstone...

Nothing's 'cheating' as long as it sounds good.
Hell, if it's the only way to hit the note, use your nose if you have to.
