Pedal to the metal
suggestions on a pedal that will give me a heavy bass sound for metal, why of course keeping in a good level of dist.

I believe you've been steered in the wrong direction somewhere along the way. The more bass you add to distortion, the flabbier/muddier/jumbled up it will be. That deep bass sound you hear on your favorite cd's is just that.... the bass guitar. You would be very surprised how a recorded guitar sounds when you take away the bass and drums. A guitar's voice is in the midrange, so don't scoop the mids either. I like my distortion tight, clear, and punchy, and there's no way to achieve that with bookoodals of bass. Distortion is a very personal thing for guitarist, and everybody has different tastes. So, what works for me might not work for someone else.
On the other hand, if all you're doing is playing at home by yourself, and that scooped bass heavy tone is what sound good to you, then by all means go for it. But, if you u plan on playing with anybody/band don't expect anybody to be able to hear you, because you will get lost in the mix.
Remember, mids are your friend :)

Spot on! I think maybe what you're going for is "Crunch" that kind of KICK that you get when you palm mute a power chord. That basically comes from high output humbuckers, a decent amp (turned up to a decent volume), and a good amount of distortion. PRS is right though, mids are your friend!
