String and bridge question

My rents just bought me an acoustic guitar to screw around with while my good one is back at home. But this guitars strings seem to be really hard to press down, and I was thinking about shaving the bridge a little and get the strings a little closer to the frets. But does anyone have any ideas on good acoustic guitar strings, and maybe how much i can shave the bridge before i get fret buzz?

My suggestion.... Find a very good luthier/guitar tech and have them adjust your bridge. If you've never done it before, or are unsure about it, don't take the risk. Find a pro.
