I was wondering if at anybody felt scared to play when they first learned guitar. When I say scared I mean more along the lines of being unconfident. I have read tons of books and guides about the guitar and other insturments and I have a basic understanding of guitar and guitar and guitar theory but I just cant muster the guts to play.

Any feedback?

Thanks

sometimes i fear not improving as much as i want to from session to session.

maybe you shouldn't set goals for yourself at first and let it run its course. try to get comfortable holding and playing around on your guitar.

There is no reason to be scared. You can practice playing in quiet where no one can hear you and there are no worries. Once you feel you are ready you can perform in front of people if thats what you are planning on doing but i wouldnt be scared to play guitar, its just an instrament. :o

Well, Mike dying is pretty serious to me. I couldn't have stopped it, I wasn't there.

It's just like anything else. The way to learn how to play without being nervous is to get lots of practice at it. The more you play in front of people, the easier it gets.

I used to be self-conscious of my playing, especially if anyone was aorund to hear it.

Now? Yeah, I'm alot better, but really I bought my equipment for MY enjoyment, and I play what sounds good to me.... and that's all that matters.

When I was learning my mom was my sounding board...who I'd always go to and say "listen to this." She's still my biggest fan, although I'm sure she's a lil biased.

Confidence will come over time. I think it's very important to play it like you mean it. That shines through more (to me anyways) than flashy chops.

Dude, my mom hates my music...she supports my playing and all, but she just cant stand the sound of an electric guitar...so occasionally I have to whip out an acoustic and play some of my fingerpicking pieces(of which I have many)just to calm her down...she has also not been a fan of any of the bands inwhich I have played, except an acoustic duo thing I did with one of my mates...but she still supports me, which is cool.

Oh, you know. I've always been a bit shy about things like that. You know, playing something that came from the heart so to speak. But I've yet to hear anyone tell me that it sucks, maybe offer some advice or a different view, but no one's ever said anything flat out bad, so it's more than anything a personal struggle. I'm still working on it though so don't ask me for advice, all I know is I've got to choke it up as I'm making contacts to start a band and the wheels are moving so I'm gonna have to show myself to make the progress... how it goes I guess. Confidence in your music is quite a thing though. I'm sure you've made some riffs or what have you and been very happy with them, right? And being satisfied with your own creation alone seems like it'd be reason enough for confidence in yourself. If you can make something that you enjoy, most likely you'll make something others can enjoy.

LOL whats all this about moms? what about your guys' dads, my dad listens to the same exact music as me so he loves the sound of a guitar and he is the only one who cares to hear me play. The most i get out of my mom when im playing is "hmm ur learning to play that thing pretty well..."

Yeah, I get unconfident when i know someones listening, the only one i could wail around and not care is my younger sister because if i couldnt i wouldnt be playing much because shes constantly around. The reason why im unconfident is because i feel like i havent progressed enough. Thats what makes me uncomfortable is the fact that i think i havent improved any.
