Getting lessons from a local music store will give u a good idea as to what you should learn and points you in the right direction, id definatley check into that, however lessons can get pretty expensive. Buy a book with chords and some of the basic scales in it and learn as much as possible. Learning to read music is very useful (although i have never accomplished it), but also learn to read "tabs". There are several lessons right on this site to guide you in that area. Time and practice make a big difference, i can not stress that enough.
