Hey i have been having many debates with my friend about styles and what sorta licks impress people, he has started to sway a country sort of style now and thinks that that in its own right can sound and look more impressive than others, mostly a matter of opinion and tatse but, would be good to have some sorta feed back as to what other people find mind blowing besisde super fast arpeggios and shredding.
Jk
Why doesn't my amp go up to 11, :(

I really like complex chords, even varied voicings can make a chord sound completely different. I am a sucker for jazzy, really complex chords, I think hectic chords can sound really impressive, especially if fingerpicked or arpeggiated somehow. I also find odd time signitures very cool, same with modulation within a song. But at the end of the day, tis probably not right to set out to impree people, just have fun and sound good.

I'm impressed by someone who can master a variety of techniques.
Good playing overall with something special that makes them stand out from the rest.

Fast shredding and stuff doesn't do anything for me at all. Usually cause the second they start playing chords or a lead with any type of feel in it, it shows that they don't know what they're really doing.

I guess best of all I like clean playing. Somebody who knows how to properly prhrase chords and leads so that they blend properly. (ie, ...I can't stand it when players use open strings that aren't even in the right key when they're trying to play smoothly between chords, or guys that can't do vibrato and bends properly)
I also like it when a player knows how to palm mute properly and can play without scratching their fingers all over the strings.

I'm impressed by a guitarist who takes, different styles of music and puts 'em together in a song that actually sounds good. Also by speed but with the notes your suposed to hit.

A guy who know how to play flamenco properly, and not all this new latin crap.

Also, a person who sounds good while posing on stage... :D

I'll tell you what SHOULD impress you... the way Jeff Beck can pry notes out of a Strat that makes you wanna just cry. Check out Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop and you'll see what I mean. It's the difference between playing a bunch of notes real fast and playing from your soul. When you can make your fingers play what you're feeling inside, and convey that to your listeners, THEN you'll impress people. I'm stepping down off my soapbox now!
