What's a talk box?
(This is the part where you get to laugh at me) ;)

Tis an effects processor that makes the guitar mimic a human voice, this is done by leading a mouth pipe/piece up a microphone stand and then singing with that in your mouth whilst playing guitar...think of the intro to Bon Jovi's living on prayer...that is a talkbox...
hahaha

Probably the most widely known talkbox music is the song "Do You Feel Like I Do" on the Peter Gabriel Comes Alive album.
A talkbox is a small speaker that feeds into a tube that fits into your mouth. The speaker is driven by a guitar amp, so you can use your mouth to shape the sound of your guitar from the talkbox speaker. A microphone picks up the sound from your mouth and delivers it to the PA system. Kind of like a blend of singing and guitar playing.

Wow, You were able to explain that so much more simply than I was trying to.

Hmm... that's neat.
Anyone make them for violin? :D
Not to venture too far from subject but if you talk into just the right spot of the F shaped sound hole of a violin you get the neatest resonance. I was sitting around talking one time and I had my violin in my hand resting up against myself and with each word I spoke I felt a vibration.
So have you set about building a talk box yet? (I'm asking the person who did the original post).

Yes, the ones they make for guitar would work for violin. If you have an electric violin it would work the same way. It's the same thing as hooking up a wah pedal to a violin.

I was kidding. But that is an interesting idea...
Don't have an electric violin. Actually some of them sound really bad. They lack the character of acoustics. In fact, some of the most popular electric violin makers' goals are to capture the sound of an acoustic for the playing needs of an electric violin buyer.
Sorry. Way off topic.
EDIT for Lordathestrings: When you brought up one's mouth being close to the sound source it made me think of the time when I heard about this person who drooled while playing violin. Disgusting. And if you have a headache you might as well put a violin down - the vibrations going through your jaw really make anything that's already there much worse.

And let me state from experience, using a talk box involves A LOT of drooling.
