All you need is 50 watt's if you get a tube amp. Even the 50 watt's is rediculously loud! A 2x12 combo or a head and a 2x12 cabinet would be sufficient also. I've got a Peavey Classic 50 2x12 combo, that is loud enough for any gig you could throw at it.

I agree with PRSPlaya. I've played several gigs and a 50 watt tube would be more than enough. I used to play a 100W Solid State and would play at like 2. Most gigs mic you up anyhow.

It all depends.
If you're playing through a PA, the smaller your amp, the better.
If not, a 50 watt tube amp should definitely do the trick.

I've got a 120 Watt Ampeg VT-22 that I rarely use 'cause I can't turn it up past 2.

I've got a 60 Watt Ampeg VT-40 that I can use 'cause it has a Master Volume that let's me turn it down enough to avoid hurtin' anyone.

For jams I usually use a 10 Watt Ampeg G-18 (transistor!) amp 'cause it sounds amazingly good without blowing out the windows.

First, you gotta get great tone.
Then you can worry about whether you're loud enough.

what kind of wattage would a solid state need to be as loud as a 50 Watt tube amp?

A good rule-of-thumb is about 3:1, so something on the order of 150 Watts.

But, you could easily get away with a 65watt solid state amp.
I played many gigs on a Marshall Avt50(when my Laney was in the shop for repairs). The Marshall was not as loud as my 50watt tube Laney, but that is not a bad thing, as with my Laney I never really turned up past three or four.

If I were you I would look hard at the Line6 SpiderII 1x12 or even 2x12, either that, or look into a Peavey Classic30 of Classic50.

You will obviously need to determine the amount which you are willing and able to spend, then see what you are able to get with that...

If this is the first big amp you are buying, a stack is overkill...they are a mission to carry around and generally not needed...but they are awesome to have and they just look so stylish, dont they?

I would go with a small(30watt-50watt) tube combo amp if I were you...but shop around!

Keeping in mind that tubes just cut right through everything. I use a 100 watt Ultimate Chorus (solid) with a buddy who had a 40 watt Vibrolux (tube) and he BURRIED me!

I only play tubes now as a result :p
