The traditional values part: through the representation of men through the media as "macho, bread winner" etc, and womens representation as the home cleaner, domestic fairy and what not, and probably through our patriarchal history in which men probably played guitar and women weren't allowed (unless they were allowed), it results in not many females being interested in taking up guitar.
[EDIT: Or of course we could take the post modernist stance in which we would say that it is down to free choice of what we want to do, and the media plays no part in it. And if I wanted to be pluralist, I could go about saying that representation through the media just reflects societies issues and what the public want to see. But both Post Modernism and Pluralism suck ass. Just thought i'd give more than one side. You decide.]
Well, I see whatcha mean.
But a girl's just gotta' think for herself no matter what the steriotypes are. I know it sounds cheesy but it's plain truth. If you have to take from media what your role or interests should be that plain sucks.
And I'm coming from an interesting perspective. I homeschool myself and take care of my elderly grandma as well as any household chores. After I'm through cooking dinner I get on the internet and watch exhaust video clips and drag strip runs... and hang out on this forum. :)
If I actually have free time I'll read a book or browse a car forum or something. I'm domestic out of neccessity, and guitar, cars, all that stuff are just what I like.
