Only if you promise not to listen or play any manson.... ...ok fine

Place your right hand lightly on the string that your palm muting near the bridge(the metal thing that holds the end of the strings on the guitars body). Its ok if your palm touches other strings that your not picking/playing

For a "loose" palm muting sound, rest your hand closer or even halfway on the bridge

For a "tight" palm mute(best with heavy distortions)rest your hand right above the bridge pickup and play.

It simply gives you that "chug" sound with distortion.

and for the love of music heres a list of metal bands you should check out...

Arch Enemy
Necrophagist
Children Of Bodom
In Flames(old stuff like whoracle, colony or jester race)
Death
Decapitated
Wintersun
Arsis
Immortal
Soilworks first album(steelbath suicide)
Krisiun(their latest stuff kills)
At The Gates
Dimension Zero
Martyr
Slayer(old stuff like reign in blood or south of heaven)
Symbyosis

That should get you started on some real metal.
Try once,fail twice...

Drop D tuning is where you tune the 6E string one step down to the key of D. Instead of tuning your guitar using the "A" note octave on the 6th, move one whole step towards the 12th fret and tune away. If your ears are good you can learn to strum the 5th and 6th string in an open chord and tune it down, you can acually do it fast enough to change tunings during a song. Palm muting is a great technique. Just place your hand on your bridge and strings. The more pressure you apply the more "Chunk" you get. You can also use this technique to clean your progressions on the higher strings up. Just mute the lower strings, and leave the high strings alone. Metallica's "Master of Puppets" and "Enter Sandman" are great practice for palm muting. And please don't play Marylyn Manson.

I can't say that I have heard of the solo album. You are probably right by saying it is good, which makes me ask why doesn't he play more intricate riffs? I choose to appreciate guitarist who strive to perform at the highest level the are capable of. But when comes to music you don't have to agree on anything, with anybody! Thats the beautiful part about it though. I really don't care who you listen to, or what songs you decide to play, as long as you are happy playing them. Somebody has to play country music too, I am just thankful it isn't me! It would be nice to sleep through rehersal sometimes though!

Probably because Marilyn Manson thinks he's the star.

Mhmm. You're right. Marilyn Manson spewed some crap about how hard rock shouldn't have complicated guitar parts.
Ridiculous.

John 5, the former guitarist, does have a solo album, and it IS really, really amazing. He just wasn't allowed to play how he wanted with Manson, cause he's a control freak. -.-

For 'Full Access subscribers' there's a video lesson in palm muting here:

http://guitartricks.com/lesson.php?input=9624

Covering:

Guitar palm muting is done using the right hand. (picking hand) Basically what you want to do is slightly muffle the strings while you're picking the strings at the same time. To do this technique properly you'll want to slightly mute the notes you're hitting with your pick, but not so much that you can't hear them. The best position for your right hand is close to, or even directly over the bridge of the guitar. You'll need to practice various pressures until you find the right one . This technique usually sounds best with power chords and distortion

The first video shows the basics of palm muting. The second video shows palm muting with power chords and distortion.
