Yer answer's yes and no...of course it has scales, but Kerry King seems to make up scales along with wails and squeals. Dimebag would often admit he didn't know but a few scales, but he didn't ever seem to have a problem. I don't guess that helps you much however.

Most things tend to follow a scale if you meant it to or not.

I don't play hardcore unless you consider BLUES hard core. But as I recall the pentatonic minor is the most common scale in metal. The lesson on this site will point you in the right direction though.

define hardcore! maybe i'm out of touch but every style has hardcore and this usually implies playing your music style with intensity and with no regard for pop.

Oh, there's some sort of disposition between metal and hardcore. I, for one, do not help that disposition. I, like many others, don't consider hardcore metal and vice versa. There are a lot of differences in the music what with abrupt breakdowns built specifically for mosh pit reaction, solos aren't as common (from what I've heard mind you so no **** please if I'm wrong). Vocal style can vary from emo type wails to blunt screams and in some cases a good growl or two. Friend of mine and I often argue over which is more brutal, death metal or hardcore. I, of course, veer towards death metal and he defends hardcore. Anyway, hardcore tends to move at a reasonable pace. Scales would probably be as common in hardcore as anywhere else though. Some use them, some don't.

hardcore is all about the dimished and augmented stuf

i know a lot of guys in hrdcore bands and i think its pure crap, but i can be pretty interesting at times

-----------------------------------4-5-7-----
----------------------------4-6-7-----
---------------------4-5-7----
--------------4-6-7----
-------5-6-8-------------
-5-7-8------------------

--------------------------------------7-9-11-----
------------------------------6-8-10-------
----------------------6-8-10-----------
---------------5-7-9--------
--------4-6-8----------
-3-5-7----

a lot of minor second diminished and augmented chords

---------------7--------
---------------7-----------
-----9--------10--------9---
-----8----------------10--
-----7---------------11------
-0-0---0-0-0-----00-----------

and the chromatic stuff

basically a bunch of noise at a really fast tempo with some odd time signatures thrown in once in a while to try and sound knowledgable of music theory should do it
