Yep, slinkys are good. The deal with the different gauges is lighter is faster and easier to bend/fret, but they break easier and aren't as good for chords. SRV played some really heavy strings, .012 mm for his high E...but you gotta have some real muscle to bend em like he did. I'd start out with .010 or .009 mm gauge, which would equal to about a .046 mm to .042 mm low E string. I tend to like my wound strings a lil heavier, and my unwounds to be just normal or light to try and get the best of both.
