if i have a 16ohm guitar cabinet that runs at 8 ohms stereo
can i run my head at 8 ohms, and run 2 speaker cables into that cabinet and be safe?
That sounds like an old Marshall cab with that ginky stereo/mono switch. In the stereo setting, the speakers are split into two 8 Ohm pairs. If your amp only has an 8 ohm output setting, you can only run half of the cab with it. If the amp output is adjustable, you are better off to set it to 4 Ohms and run the cab mono 4 Ohms.

yeah, thats one of the cabinets i am trying marshall 1960b 16 mono, 8 stereo, 4 mono, but ive seen people with a head set at 8 ohms with a peavey triple xxx cabinet which is 16 ohms running it with 2 speaker cables on stereo, im trying to figure out if that is safe or not
Two cables from the stereo cab will be like having two 8 Ohm cabs. So the jacks at the back of the amp will connect them in parallel, giving a 4 Ohm mono setup. The switch on your 1960 cab does the same thing, and you only need one cable.
