Squealing string trick
Hey, there's this trick that is mostly used in metal or... some rock where they pick the string a certain way and make it so it sounds alot higher and kind of like its squealing. It's been bugging me cuz I dunno how to do it. If someone could tell me exactly how to do that, it would be extremely apprieciated.

The technique is called a pinch harmonic, and is kind of hard to explain how to do. I suggest doing a search on the forums for "pinch harmonics." This topic has been brought up quite a bit, so you should be able to find the information you need.

hold your pick firmly, while plucking the string with the pick, brush the lower half of your thumb lightly across the string. it works best when you bend the note with your fretting hand. also try it on your 6th string 3rd or 4th frett or your 3rd string 12-15th frett. don't be disapointed if it doesn't work at first. keep practicing it. also if it doesnt work at first, try to hit the string harder, softer, faster or slower....the attack you have on the string matters. i hope this helps you out.

I'll rotate my pick a little towards my palm so my thumb and the pick hit simultaneously. Move your picking hand around and you'll find some places easier than others, with different tones (same with fretting hand).

try these 2 techniques.
hold your pick so that only a few mm of the tip (sharp end) is visible, this means when you play the note your thumb will brush the string causing a harmonic, but only if your pick hand is the correct distance from the note you're fretting, so first fret a note eg; any fret on your g string between 3 and 9 [i find them easiest there , it works most anywhere]
then starting at the bridge and working forward pick the string with a sharp percussive attack, at the same time vibrato the note,
keep trying til you find the correct distance(there's more than one) with practise you should find the distance instinctively.
an easier but more limited way is to sound a natural harmonic over the fret-, pick normally then press down and vibrato (this sounds great but only on wound strings and on the 2nd, 3rd,and 4th frets- good for spicing up those chugging e riffs.
sorry i can't explain it better, but persevere and once you get one you'll be squealing like a pig!
