does anyone know how to alleviate stiffness in the fretting hand reasonably quickly? Is there any therapy you can apply? Any suggestions would be helpful.

You could try hot water before warm up exercises
My instructors page and www.studiotrax.net for all things recording.

Yea but after you use hot water, you're hands get soggy and you can't play :p.

Have you tried just doing the 1-2-3-4 tab up and down the fretboard. Sorry, I don't know of any therapy, stretch your fingers beforehand? That may be bad for your tendons

I dont know if this helps but try and relax when playing. I just play scales for about a half hour (or as long as it takes before it bores the heck out of you). After doing this i fell my hands loosening and i also try adn relax as much as possible.

Just play. But play slowly, relaxing your hands. Your hands tend to tense up a little when you try to play fast, but if you warm up properly, your hands will feel loose and you'll feel like you can play anything :)
Practice 8 hours a day and God Bless you.

I definitely agree with warming up. You warm up and stretch before working out, or you should, its the same with playing guitar.
