I think this is one of the biggest mistakes for beginning guitarists. Don't learn riffs at first! I think the best way to go starting out is Chords Chords Chords! Just play songs that play standard chords (A E D or anything) and get used to all the basic chords plus the bar chord that can be played anywhere on the guitar:

I think this is the quickest way to develop fundamental skills on the guitar. If you absolutely must, try not to spend more then 20% of your time learning riffs.
