Also, it's good to remember where certain scales start. When You're told to play for instance, F Lydian, don't think of the scale as C major, think of Lydian, where all of it's intervals are, and remember to focus on the chords in the progression, not think so much of what scale you're using. If you only stay within the same patterns, you'll have trouble developing your phrasing, (I should know, my phrasing sucks seriously). It's important to know what scale would best go over something, but it's also best to know the progression and feel out what to play, know what I mean? :D
