How about Artist in the Ambulance by thrice, the intro is all palm muted.Their band is sorta like s.o.a.d.Also dammit by blink 182 has some palm mutting in it, and its really easy to play.Thats not really like s.o.a.d though.

You might want to start with early metallica(everything from '...and justice for all' and down)or Slayer.Lots of palm muting and good rhythms.

Palm muting is quite a versitile little trick really. There are multiple degrees of palm muting, like a slight mute which has your hand barely touching the strings, the standard, which slows the ringing but gets a good and gritty sound, then the full mute which is basically just stopping the notes from really sounding. I find that I can get some quicker riffing when I use palm muting and it helps to build tension and aggression. At least it does with some of the stuff I write. Of course you can mute individual strings with or without distortion for a whole new sound and style. Palm muting while finger picking as well can offer a whole different feel.

The most common use of it Id say is palm muting a chord... then strumming it and going from it being completely palm muted to not. Its a cool effect. Guns n Roses did that in loads of there songs. The first chord in Sweet Child is done this way.
