I have bought quite a few things on ebay and have never had any problems. I haven't bought a guitar yet though.
I once bought "stuff" from some guy's pocket. $5 it cost me for a back full of stuff. There was a peg, an arcade token, dime and a nickel, cough drop wrapper, some pocket lint (of course), a plastic zebra, a couple pendants and some poker chips.
